“Financial Systems Re-Generation: MAPS, GAPS and TRAPS”
In the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis, public confidence in the financial system seems waning and regulatory requirements seem to have increased, thereby stifling economic growth. But externally-imposed regulations will not ensure sustainable financial system improvement. Rather, the financial system players have to regenerate themselves; they have to rebuild themselves by leveraging and optimizing on their internal strengths and re-examining their weaknesses with a renewed resolution to move forward. This conference discusses three aspects of financial system re-generation: maps, gaps and traps. We deliberate on the maps by discussing the possible future path and attempt to paint a picture of the potential outlook. We also examine the gaps in terms of what deficiencies we still have or will likely remain. Gaps may also present opportunities for improvement and future expansion. Finally, we look to the future with renewed vigour and optimism, by balancing our outlook with potential traps in the form of pitfalls, dangers, and threats to financial system stakeholders.
