MISA5 Workshop: Analysis of Water Soluble Hydrocarbons and Identification of Their Transport Pathway
ANALYSIS OF WATER SOLUBLE HYDROCARBONS AND IDENTIFICATION OF THEIR TRANSPORT PATHWAYS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT
Background
Petroleum hydrocarbon is one of the serious pollutants in the marine environment. The water soluble hydrocarbons are among the most toxic compounds in the marine environment. USEPA has listed 16 priority PAHs that cause severe health implications to the organisms and some of the PAHs has been found to be both carcinogenic and mutagenic and are very persistent in the environment. Coal power plant has a very long history in the Sub Antarctica regions. Burning of coals produce soot particles associated with pyrogenic PAHs (Gustafsson et al., 1997) and can be transported far and wide via wind and water currents. The transportaion is termed as transboundary pollution. Zakaria et al (2002), applied fingerprinting techniques to trace petroleum polluion in the Malaysian coastal environments. Similar study in the Antarctic is one of the crucial aspects that has much more rooms to explore. This workshop offers the participant with fundamental concept on the long range transport, application of molecular technique in identification the source of hydrocarbons contaminants in the marine environment. We also would like to have inputs from the senior members in the same area who has actively involved in the analysis to contribute to the establishment of the analysis technique for the future exploration.
