While universities and research institutes are aware of the need to nurture an academic culture that supports sound scholarship and offers a curriculum that productively transfers knowledge, they also recognize the need to develop mechanisms that appropriately assesses research performance. Universities also need to comply with government mandates, compete globally for excellent researchers and students, and review and substantiate accreditation for the courses that they offer.
Executives who lead research institutions are aware that if they are to encourage a strong academic research culture, one that infuses a spirit of intellectualism among the faculty, they have to adopt and execute a fair measurement of sound tutelage and excellent scholarship. Research institutions around the world are using different tools to evaluate quality of instruction and research output.
To address these challenges faced by executives of research institutions, the University of Malaya, one of the leading universities in Malaysia together with Thomson Reuters, the world's leading source of intelligent information for researchers, academia and scientists, will be hosting a conference on research evaluation for higher education on 5-6 July 2012. This conference will host renowned speakers and panellists from the Ministry of Higher Education, universities and research institutions from Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and United Kingdom, who will share and debate ideas about how to foster sound scholarship, improve academic standards and determine a just method to measure the quality of research and its output.
Highlights of the conference include:
• a review of the national strategic plan for research in higher institutions in Malaysia,
• building a world-class university, and
• developing meaningful performance measures for universities and research institutions
